ATO Self managed super fund June 2011 statistical report

As at June 2011, there were more than 450,000 SMSFs with 867,000 members.

For the 2010-11 year, 33,000 SMSFs were established.

A quarter of SMSFs have between $200,000 - $500,000 and another 23% have between $500,000 - $1m. Approximately 16% have between $1m - $2m.

The average member has $466,000 of assets in a SMSF, and the average SMSF has $888,000 in assets.

Most SMSFs have either 1 or 2 members – 23% have 1 member and 67% have 2 members.

Total assets in the SMSF sector was over $418,000m.

38% of assets were held in listed shares (33%) and listed trust (5%), 27% in cash and term deposits, and 14% in real property (10.5% in non-residential real property, 3.5% residential real property).
